Highlights of CAR-66

DGCA CAR-66 harmonise the aircraft maintenance personnel licensing system with EASA Part 66.

CAR-66 eliminates the system of obtaining Airframe, Engine, Electrical, Instrument and Radio System Licences separately.

AME Examination Guide

Category of CAR-66 AME License: Aircraft maintenance licences include the following categories:

  • Category A-  A category A aircraft maintenance engineer’s licence permits the holder to issue certificates of release to service following minor scheduled line maintenance and simple defect rectification within the limits of tasks specifically endorsed on the authorization issued by an organization approved under rule 133B for the type of aircraft endorsed on the licence
  • Category B1– A category B1 aircraft maintenance engineer’s licence shall permit the holder to issue certificates of release to service following maintenance including aircraft structure, power plant and mechanical and electrical systems in respect of an air-craft type endorsed on license. Replacement of avionic line replaceable units, re-quiring simple tests to prove their serviceability shall also be included in the priv-ileges. Category B1 shall automatically include the appropriate A subcate-gory.
  • Category B2-A category B2 aircraft maintenance engineer’s licence shall permit the holder to issue certificates of release to service following maintenance on avionic and electrical systems of an aircraft type endorsed on the licence .
  • Category C -A category C aircraft maintenance engineer’s licence shall permit the holder to issue certificates of release to service following base maintenance on aircraft type en-dorsed on the licence.

Categories A and B1 are subdivided into subcategories relative to combinations of aeroplanes, helicopters, turbine and piston engines. The subcategories are:

  • A1 and B1.1 Aeroplanes Turbine
  • A2 and B1.2 Aeroplanes Piston
  • A3 and B1.3 Helicopters Turbine
  • A4 and B1.4 Helicopters Piston

Basic knowledge for categories A, B1 and B2 are indicated by the knowledge levels (1, 2 or 3) against each applicable subject. Category C applicant shall meet either category B1 or B2 basic knowledge level.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been conducting examinations for issue of Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AME) License, in accordance with Rule 61 of Indian Aircraft Rules 1937. The Central Examination Organisation(CEO) of DGCA, located at R. K. Puram, New Delhi is responsible for conducting these examinations, in accordance with CAR -66 on modular system. These examinations will generally be conducted on-line, at the designated centers. The information regarding the schedule of examinations and centers etc. will be published on the DGCA web-site: www.dgca.nic.in. “VIMAN” is the official web-site of DGCA for the registration of both existing and new AMEs/ applicants, desirous to appear for AME examinations.
